Flowering flax was introduced in 1820 from its native Algeria and soon became a staple of cottage gardens; the larger flowered rubrum was especially prized. Flax is now found in a rare mix of colors of red, white, salmon, and lilac, many with darker eyes in the centers of the glistening cup-shaped flowers. Long flowering, it opens new blossoms every morning as the old shed their petals.
