Circa 1758 Delphinium elatum was the parent of many hybrids, Victor Lemoine, a French breeder from the mid-1800s, led the way in introducing delphinium hybrids into borders. This aristocrat of the flower border is less heavy-headed than hybrids, and rarely needs staking. Instead, it flaunts towering spires crowded with cobalt-blue petals brushed with violet in early summer gardens. Long-lived, combine with lilies, phlox, and roses for old-fashioned romance.
